The Varsity, an Atlanta institution

After months of driving past we finally made it to The Varsity!  At 61 North Avenue, the downtown Atlanta location can't be missed as you drive into town as it's apparently the World's Largest Drive-In.  Known for their burgers, we ended up going for dessert (and onion rings!) after dinner at Miso Izakaya.

The onion rings and shakes weren't mind-blowing, but the view was!

We're off to North Carolina to (relax at the beach, stress out again, scramble over last-minute details and) get hitched!!!  Keep an eye on the blog for wedding pics and updates from our honeymoon travels :)

Taqueria El Rey Del Taco: 5288 Buford Hwy

The other week we drove out to Buford Highway to try out Taqueria El Rey Del Taco, known for their goat tacos.

It did not disappoint.
best queso ever (with jalapenos)

That's one way to translate tripe.
pollo y goat (I forget the spanish word)
suadero
Al Pastor
Everything was delicious and so cheap.  We had to ask ourselves, why don't we eat on Buford more often?  At 7:30 pm during the week there's hardly any traffic and it takes less than 15 minutes to get to some amazing Vietnamese, Mexican, etc. restaurants.  Making mental plans to go back soon, who's interested?

Out There Atlanta: have you listened?

The third episode of Out There Atlanta is up!  We went to the Sweet Auburn Curb Market, a community-oriented covered market in MLK Jr's old neighborhood.  Check it out, tell your friends!

100th post!

Friends and family, we have arrived to the 100th post of this blog!  Alex and I started this blog as a way to share our travels with our families.  Once we returned stateside and moved to Atlanta it became a visual diary of the things we've been doing and continues to connect us to the people in our lives.

This being a landmark post, I thought it a fitting way to announce our honeymoon plans.

We're going to TURKEY!!!!

Alex spent a cumulative 2 years in Turkey while a college student but I've never been.  We're both thrilled for this opportunity to explore the country together, and for Alex to show me all the things he's told me about.

Right now I'm really looking forward to Cappadocia...

We'll be in Turkey next month, so stay tuned to the blog for updates on the road and travel pics, and thanks for reading!

Literary Atlanta: Part 1

After months of passing by and never noticing it, we finally paid a visit to the Margaret Mitchell House.  Margaret Mitchell authored Gone With the Wind which was made into a moderately successful film.  Just kidding - when adjusted for inflation it was the highest grossing film ever made!*

The Margaret Mitchell House was in the 1930s an apartment house where Margaret Mitchell and her husband John Marsh resided when she wrote her novel.  The tour of the Margaret Mitchell house took us through the small basement apartment that they lived in.  Though none of the furniture is the original, you can still envision their living arrangement during the period in which she wrote.

We also learned some interesting facts, including the similarities between Margaret Mitchell's life and that of Scarlett, her heroine. Also, the character for Scarlett O'Hara was originally named PANSY.  Why was that ever a good idea?  Most inappropriate character name I've ever heard of.

The annex of the Margaret Mitchell House has large photos of some of the costumes from the movie as well as a documentary of the making of.  The video was pretty amazing - we found out just how crazy the filming was, with a constantly changing script, a revolving door of directors, and no final script when it was done.  And the insane budget, and the ridiculous editing marathon, and the blow-out for the Atlanta premiere, and the awards!
The annex also had screenplays so visitors could reenact their favorite scenes.   Look how much fun we're having!

All in all, a very fascinating historic site and a great way to reconnect with a bit of Atlanta's literary and cinematic history.

Margaret Mitchell.  What a fox! (and I'm not referring to the cat)

Cartoon Time

After a few years hiatus I (Alex) have decided to start cartooning again. I'll be doing regular editorial cartoons and illustrations for the website www.partisans.org .

The first toon is copied here but is also available in large format at:

Cartooning played a big role in my college experience. Here is an old article from the Daily Northwestern about my life with cartoons:

With this recent Partisans project I'm returning to an ink and brush style I experimented with years ago and always wanted to return to. I like the hand-drawn messy quality. You can see it in this cartoon from 2006.
